An unusually ambitious synthesis, Yet I wonder whether the decisive threshold is not Peak Everything in a strictly geological sense, but peak convertibility: the point at which resources may still exist, yet societies can no longer transform them into usable capability at tolerable energetic, financial, political, and temporal cost.

It appears as declining grades, longer and more vulnerable supply chains, rising maintenance burdens, expanding debt, and a widening gap between nominal output and net usable surplus. Civilizations do not become brittle when the final unit disappears, but when sustaining their own complexity consumes the slack required to absorb shocks, experiment, and recover.
In that sense, the deepest danger may be the loss of strategic optionality. Peak Everything may ultimately be peak optionality—the moment a civilization still possesses assets, technology, and knowledge, but no longer possesses enough surplus, time, or institutional freedom to choose among futures.
Atlas, the central warning is persuasive, but I wonder whether “Peak Everything” risks framing the problem too much as physical exhaustion.
Mineral reserves are dynamic economic inventories, not fixed geological countdowns. A resource can remain abundant in the crust while becoming functionally scarce because ore quality declines, extraction becomes more energy-intensive, processing is geographically concentrated, or transport and political access become unreliable.
The more immediate danger may therefore be strategic inaccessibility rather than absolute depletion. Modern systems do not require a material to disappear before they begin to fail; they require predictable quantities, at acceptable cost, within specific time windows. Once those conditions deteriorate, nominal abundance can coexist with operational scarcity.
This also changes the historical analogy. Civilizations may not collapse because they consume the final unit of a resource, but because the rising cost and complexity of maintaining access consume the surplus on which adaptation depends.
In that sense, functional scarcity precedes physical exhaustion—and the real threshold may be reached when preserving the extraction system costs more than the system can afford.
Perhaps I am whistling past the graveyard, but I assume we will find new sources or new resources. But past performance is no guarantee of future returns.
Still, a fascinating essay that at least reminds us that innovation is needed when existing resources grow too expensive to rely on.
